Tight schedule for New York theatre production of Sofi Oksanen’s Purge

The bare brick walls have a stained and Bohemian look. The floor is black, and there are wires hanging everywhere. The room could be a small theatre anywhere in the world, but this one happens to be in New York.

It is Monday, and the American theatre group behind the production of Purge by Sofi Oksanen has just been allowed onto the stage of the La MaMa Theatre, where the play will be performed, in order to work on the set. It is three days to the premiere.

“Oh, hey, Estonian Television”, says director Zishan Ugurlu as she answers her mobile phone. “I can’t do anything today. Too much work.”
