NATO High-Level Officials attend the opening ceremony of the Energy Security Centre in Vilnius

The new Energy Security Centre in Vilnius was opened on 14 January 2011. Under the leadership of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs the centre will contribute to international initiatives with a special emphasis on cooperation with NATO.

The NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Dirk Brengelmann, and the Deputy NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, Dr. Jamie Shea represented the Alliance at the ceremony.

According to the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Audronius Azubalis, the establishment of the Energy Security Centre in Vilnius is a response to the major contemporary global challenges in the field of energy security. The new Energy Security Centre will aim to gain the status of a NATO Centre of Excellence contributing to the Alliance’s capability in the field of energy security.
