Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that Estonia is responding to Ukraine’s appeal and will help Western Ukraine obtain 500 000 kroons’ worth of A/H1N1 treatments in response to the flu surge in the country. “The medicine will be sent within the next few days. We hope that the aid provided by Estonia will help to alleviate the situation in Ukraine,” said Foreign Minister Paet.

On 31 October, Ukraine issued an appeal through the European Union and directly to Estonia for help with the A/H1N1 epidemic in Western Ukraine, in order to obtain treatment and protective resources to restrict and alleviate the spread of the virus.

On 30 October Ukraine officially announced that three regions in Western Ukraine were being declared epidemic zones due to the A/H1N1 flu virus. A quarantine has been declared in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathia, Vinnytsia, Volynia, Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, Chernivtsi, and Lvov oblasts. Schools have been shut down for three weeks.
