A consortium including Transferewise co-founder and Estonian Taavet Hinrikus has conducted a management buy-out of The New European, the make-shift weekly print title initially launched on a four-week run in 2016 to fight Brexit.

The new owner of the weekly British edition is a consortium that includes, among others, former The New York Times and BBC chief Mark Thompson and long-time editor-in-chief of The Financial Times Lionel Barber.

In addition to Transferwise, Hinrikus has also played an important role in the development of Skype.

Matt Kelly, the current editor-in-chief, will continue to organize the work of the anti-Brexit weekly newspaper. "I am very excited to lead a new chapter in the remarkable life of New Europe," said Kelly. He added that since the Brexit referendum, the publication had shown that there was considerable market interest in high-quality, provocative and entertaining journalism written for readers who were deeply concerned about the future of Britain and Europe. Kelly confirmed that new and experienced investors will undoubtedly contribute to the development of The New European.
