The absence of any community volunteers on this board is refelected in the overall lack of community enthusiasm towards this project. It’s very difficult to call whatever the new Toronto-Estonian-ESK-ETCU-Vironia LLC, corporate facility will be called, “our” community home. Our community’s participation is very clearly unwanted. We only have ourselves to blame, for allowing people who have no interest in our community or culture to take control of it in this way.
Glen Leis19 Apr 2018 13:52
To satisfy my curiosity, if I have no love of our community or culture, what do you think my reasons were for joining the board?
To Järelhüüe21 Apr 2018 17:32
The current board members have been putting in upwards of 15 - 20 VOLUNTARY hours per week for the past several months. They are leading 2 projects simultaneously - the sale of Eesti Maja and the acquisition of properties along with planning for the new Eesti Keskus. Several of them have been amongst the MOST ACTIVE young community leaders in skaudid, hundud, Metsaülikool, korporatsioonid, Jõekääru, Seedrioru etc. They would not have joined the board if they weren't seriously committed to the long term success of the Estonian community in Canada. Many are balancing young families and very busy professional careers. Thank you to all of them for their time and effort! Jõudu edaspidisele tööle!
Just a little transparency?21 Apr 2018 21:51
Why doesn’t each member outline their community activism in public bios so that the community can see exactly how active they are? If there’s a fabrication, then our community organizations can correct it. At the same time, why not post education details too? Nothing beats skepticism like some strong sunlight!
More transparency22 Apr 2018 07:28
It appears that many shareholder wish that the board would have just done what they said they would. Look at the feasibility of the Madison project and at the end, make a go or no-go decision to do it.

It is clear now that the board has been moving very quickly to sell off the EM before due diligence is complete.

It does not matter that they have been volunteering 15 hours or more per week because at the end of the day, the shareholders were mislead.
An Observer19 Apr 2018 13:43
I am puzzled by the commentary. If a candidate was not elected to the EH Board, this was the will of the shareholders who cast their ballots last night. There is no need to be bitter. Let's all look forward to the completion of the due diligence process. I must admit to being astonished at the vitriol of some of the speakers. It was embarrassing to listen to some of the comments (purported misleading of the community, etc.)
Shareholder?19 Apr 2018 13:52
Shareholders? You mean the Estonian Credit Union. No independent candidate ever had a chance against all those shares. And it’s been made very clear from day one that Estonian House decisions are for shareholders only, not the community.
So what?19 Apr 2018 15:05
If the figures from the link below are accurate - the EM board's candidates would have received more votes than the independent candidates even excluding the ECU (714 shs) and ESK (129 shs) voting blocks.

An Observer19 Apr 2018 15:19
The arithmetic is very simple. Even if the largest shareholder (ETCU) had abstained from voting, the results would not have changed. When someone likes the results of a vote, they call the results "democracy in action". When the same person disagree with the outcome, all types of motives are ascribed to the other side. When our parents came to Canada as circa 1950 "boat people", they scraped together the funds (or volunteered their labour) to buy/build what was within their means. Canada has been good to our community. We can aspire to a beautiful new home. The purpose of the due diligence process is to ascertain if it is within the means of the community. I await the completion of this process. And oh yes, I plan on making a donation.

you mean the old house at 11 Madison?
Margus Jukkum19 Apr 2018 16:36
Just to complete the math equation for So What, Raivo Remmel and the Estonian House had 841 shares to vote.
Väino V. Keelmann19 Apr 2018 16:47
What is the size of your donation?
So what?20 Apr 2018 08:16
Margus- Were these all shares held by EM, or proxies submitted by shareholders who support the board?

"Just to complete the math equation for So What, Raivo Remmel and the Estonian House had 841 shares to vote."

Margus, they actually didn't.
Those shares that have been donated/returned to EM are removed from share capital and no one is able to vote them.

Jõudu EM juhatuse uuele kooseisusele!

Väino Keelman - what business is it of yours how large someone's donation is?
Is the $50 that someone on a small fixed income gives somehow less important that your $10,000?
An Observer19 Apr 2018 17:19
Hr Keelmann asked about what I might donate. It's in the five figures. And the same question to Hr Keelmann?

Evi makes a key point. The donation should be consistent with one's means. Not all can afford the same. Thanks, Evi.

I guess some people forgot to use snail mail for sending original signature documents?

Then of course there is something called a telephone.

Unfortunately BOTH sides are guilty of not using either method.
An Observer20 Apr 2018 16:38
I find it amusing that Hr Keelmann is not willing to indicate whether he will make a donation. And what it might be. My identity should have nothing to do with supporting a community cause.

In response to So What? these are proxies that are proffered by supporters of the Board and not shares that have been donated and returned to the Estonian House as Evi Tarkus had mistakenly thought I was writing about. The numbers may fluctuate with various meetings over the years but in general are correct as confided to me by a former Board member.

Hei Margus.

Every shareholder has the right to hand their proxy to whomever they wish.
I, for example, am one of those shareholders that entirely voluntarily handed my proxy to the Eesti Maja juhatus.
I know how I would vote my share, and I also know that the juhatus wil honour my wish.
Don't forget to mention the proxies that the "friends" collected, that you conveniently forgot to mention.
I wonder who had more . . . ;)

More on transparency.

It is my understanding that the jüripäeva paraad, scheduled last year to take place at EM, where it has been held for years now, was bumped less than a week before the event. The new juhatus had been in power for but two business days prior to paraad. Which celebrates our scouting youth in the Estonian language, giving inducement to many to continue contributing to our dwindling community abroad.

I gather the Baptist church was quick and generous to assist in providing space. The EM explanation was that necessary roof repairs were to take place. Something that had been known for quite some time. Why did this take place in such a manner, not supporting our youth? For whom the EK is supposed to be built? Surely the work could have been postponed by a day or two. Apparently, no work was being performed at EM while the parade took place. And no reasons provided for the timing. This is not how to unify a split community. And cleft it is in a major way judgin by all the above comments.
David Hogg25 Apr 2018 07:40
Actually we were notified several weeks in advance. We had a couple of back up plans and decided on the Baptist Church. It worked out fine.

It was a minor inconvenience and not that big of a deal.
Margus Jukkum28 Apr 2018 12:07
In response to Evi Vahtra, yes, "every shareholder has the right to hand over their proxy to whomever they wish." Where things get morally a little dubious with the actions of the 4 orgs is the solicitation of these proxies. People phoning shareholders, obviously working with a so-called confidential list of shareholders that is not open to the general public, and asking to represent the share.

Tere hommikust Peeter Einola!

How is this any different than Doug Ford calling me asking me to support him? I didn't agree to be listed as a voter, nor would I support him. From what "secret list" did he obtain my name to be able to call me?!
millions of dollars question06 May 2018 07:06
The EH situation is much different that Doug Ford calling you for a vote. DF has access to pretty much every Canadian's name as you and I. He does not, however, have easy access to the names of people who bought EH shares, so he will have to work a lot harder to find out who those people are. The EH board has a list of names and an obligation in front of the community to act ethically. Unethical action will cost them in the long run.

Point to ponder: If it turns out that the EH board missed the mark and it turns out that they are building an expensive building that we as community members will not be able to afford to rent, then they will have significantly weakened our community, if not destroyed it. Remember why the EH board is doing any of this at the present moment -- the present house in its decrepit state IS NOT SUSTAINABLE.

The millions of dollars question is -- will the very, very expensive centre, which will run in to cost overruns (who is going to pay for this?), WILL IT BE SUSTAINABLE for our community? Are we building a centre for use by the general Canadian public and will we be the Estonian paupers looking in the beautiful glass windows to instead rent space for Estonian events in more affordable buildings?

We are putting a lot of trust into the EH board. Will they be able to deliver? If not, we may lose our community in Toronto.
