Paet to Participate in Afghanistan Conference in London

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will participate in the international Afghanistan conference taking place in London on Thursday, 28 January. The international community’s efforts in co-operation with Afghanistan to rebuild the country will be discussed.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that the co-ordinated activity of the European Union, NATO, the USA and other international donors and partners is extremely important. “It is also essential to increase Afghanistan’s preparedness, to implement vital reforms to improve the country’s socio-economic situation, to fight against corruption and the narcotics trade, and to make the activities of the government sector more effective,” said Paet. He expressed hope that the London conference would bring us closer to the situation in which it will be possible to gradually starting handing responsibility over to the Afghan authorities.

The conference in London is taking place on the foreign ministerial level and all 44 nations that contribute to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), Afghanistan’s close neighbours, the UN, the European Union, and the World Bank have been invited to attend.

Within the framework of the conference, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet also has bilateral meetings scheduled with the foreign ministers of Jordan, Australia, and Turkmenistan.
