A Canadian restaurant chain that specializes in fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds and known in Canada as poutine, has dropped one such dish named after Russia's president over the war in Ukraine.

Frites Alors! used to call its signature dish "The Vladimir," after Russia's president Vladimir Putin.

But following customer complaints, they changed it to "The Volodymyr" in honor of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Vladimir had been added to its menu when Putin was re-elected president in 2012.

"When people realized that Putin was dropping bombs (on Ukraine), at that point we decided to make the menu change," co-owner and director of product development of Frite Alors, Yannick de Groote said.

For Frite Alors, the name change was more than just appeasing public recommendation. Yannick said the change was a way for the restaurant to express its disagreement towards Putin, who he described as a "person who keeps everyone on their toes and does things that are inconceivable these days."
