The Social Democrats have emerged victorious from Lithuania's parliamentary election, enabling a return to power for the party that led Lithuania into economic crisis of 2008.
The Social Democrats finished second in the popular vote on 14 October, with 18.3%, but in yesterday's second round – which decided 71 of the 141 seats in the Seimas – it emerged as the most powerful party. Its 15 seats in the first round and 23 in the second gave it five seats more than the centre-right Homeland Union of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.
The Social Democrats' second-round victory extinguished Kubilius's lingering hopes that his party could overturn its four-seat deficit from the first round and gain the right to make the first attempt to form a coalition.
