Most evenings, Drs. Jaanus and Reet Marley walk through their beloved Beach neighbourhood to take in some air, enjoy the view and each other.

Over the years, their evening constitutionals have brought joy to others as well. The family physicians donate loose change they find en route to the Fresh Air Fund to help send disadvantaged kids to camp.

They’re pennies from heaven.

OK, the money is falling from pockets and purses along the routes they favour. When they spot something shiny on the ground, the good doctors pick it up pocketing everything from pennies to paper currency. Parking ticket machines and TTC stops yield an occasional jackpot of a loonie or toonie. When the couple gets home, the loot is tossed into a big old cup in their kitchen.

When the cup runneth over, the Marleys donate their lucky finds to the Fresh Air Fund. Every bit counts when it comes to making summer wishes come true for kids.

They’ve been doing it for years. This year’s contribution was $172.55.

“It’s a very good program,” Reet said of the Fresh Air Fund. All money raised benefits the kids, and as outdoorsy people, the couple knows the benefits of spending time in the fresh air.

Their daughters Elin Marley, 30 and Karin Remerowski, 34, enjoyed many blissful summer days at an Estonian Camp and camping with the Girl Guides as did Reet. Jaanus was a Boy Scout. And the tradition is sure to continue. Granted it will be a few more years before granddaughter Vera Remerowski, only 1 1/2 years old will be sleeping under the stars.

If you have been touched by the Fresh Air Fund or have a story to tell, email or phone 416-869-4309.

How to Donate: With your gift, the Fresh Air Fund can help send 25,000 disadvantaged and special needs children to camp. The experience gives these children much more than relief from the summer heat — it gives these children a break in life and memories to last a lifetime. Our target is $650,000.

By cheque: Mail to The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund, One Yonge St., Toronto, ON M5E 1E6
