Russian opposition leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov was arrested on December 31 on Moscow's Triumfalnaya Square during a peaceful anti-government rally. He has spent New Year's night at Tverskoe police precinct, where he remains now. He is being charged with "disobeying police", which carries up to 15 days' imprisonment. The trial is set for January 2.

Ilya Yashin, another leading member of "Solidarity" movement, was also arrested on December 31 and faces the same charge. He is currently being held at Basmannoe precinct. The trial is set for January 2. Meanwhile, Eduard Limonov, leader of "Another Russia" party, was arrested on December 31, as he was preparing to go to the rally, and given 15 days in prison for "insulting police".

Dozens of people were detained in Moscow and St. Petersburg during opposition rallies on December 31.
