Brussels thanks Estonia for smooth euro switch

Brussels - The European Union's executive on Monday thanked Estonia for managing a smooth switch to the euro, two days after the Baltic state bade farewell to its post-Soviet currency, the kroon.

Estonia, whose population is just 1.3 million, has emerged as the euro's poster child in recent months, with its record of fiscal austerity putting it in line to join the currency as fiscal recklessness in other states triggered a confidence crisis.
