He made a career for himself in the KGB. He served in Estonia, in Moscow in the infamous Lubjanka, and elsewhere.
I dove into his memoire, "Minu elu KGBs" with enthusiasm, expecting to read his second thoughts about loyally serving Soviet authorities by beating the snot out of dissidents in the Lunjanka's basement cells.
Alas, his recollections are those of a myopic mediocrity who saw no deficiencies in Soviet life; not then nor later.
His daily duties involved little more than writing memos and attending meetings.
