If there is a claim that parking will keep people away from Madison Avenue, may I suggest that perhaps the function wasn't important enough to that person.

I believe the Eesti Maja (EM) website states 60 parking spaces. http://www.estohouse.com/facil...

So if there are more than 60 cars guess where they will be parking ..... yep on the streets

HOW Handicap accessible is the EM once a handicapped is parked? As far as I am aware there is only ONE handicapped space next to the accessible entrance BUT how far is this entrance from the 60 spaces in the back of EM

How is the parking for NYC EM for Vabariigi Aastapäev (VA).... or other functions? Off-street parking mainly, yet the peoplestill come. Handicapped are dropped of at the main entrance and are assisted into the building

How accessible was the parking when past VA celebrations were held at UofT Convocation Hall, Massey Hall ? What about Jüripäev at the Armory? (sorry I never went so could be wrong about this). I believe this parking issue is a "red herring" used by individuals who just can't get over the fact that the EM has been sold and the activities will move over to Madison. I am sorry to hear/read these type of fake-news/problems.

Baptists park at the EM for their services and events and walk over. Thats about the same distance as OISE and the surrounding streets at Madison.
If they want to come, they will!

Kus see parkimisuuring siis on? Oleks hea seda näha, enne kui kommida.

Me thinks that the parking study is full of absurd assumptions and premises like the peak 12 cars. Naturally it is better to keep it hiďden.
LV09 Apr 2019 07:50
I know my comment here will be challenged to say the least but given the fact that parking has not really come up for discussion until recently and when it has come up before it was pushed to the side, all the people were interested in was the new facility and what it would stand for. Parking around Madison is at a minimal, or in a pay parking lot or not at all. I know for a fact several estonians that frequent the Credit Union on a regular basis have already said that they will be closing their accounts and moving their monies elsewhere and have stated that the new facility is just a big joke. And what I find really mind boggling is that now you can make a substantial donation and have your contribution recognized - I thought the whole idea was for funds to be raised in a normal manner not to ask for Handouts.

Desperate misdirection09 Apr 2019 09:03
Is this the same Markus Alliksaar who fought against the community's (or 95% of shareholders') wishes to redevelop the EM at Broadview?

Dredging up the parking trope now seems insincere coming from him. He's in the "status quo or nothing" boat. Lasketiir uber alles.
lugeja09 Apr 2019 10:58
Was Mr. Alliksaar really against redeveloping the EM at Brodaview? I think you should do some fact checking, I'm pretty sure Mr. Alliksaar was actually in favour of redeveloping the EM as opposed to selling it. And I'm quite sure that no proposal had the backing of 95% of shareholders.
Archive09 Apr 2019 12:09
I don't think MA has ever fought against redevelopment at 958 Broadview or even at Madison. If he has, at least not publicly.

Sorry - 97.5% voted in favour of the LOI with Tribute.

Ok, maybe I'm reading between the lines about what the position of the president of the Toronto Estonian Rifle and Pistol Club might have been on re-development at Broadview which would have put an end to the lasketiir. He also resigned from the EM board due to irreconcilable differences.

Misleading mention of majority09 Apr 2019 17:34
Too many in our local Estonian community and in Estonia assume that the majority of Estonians in Toronto voted in favour of selling the Estonian House.
The Estonian House voting system allows one vote per share. This has made it possible for large shareholders like the Estonian Credit Union (750 + shares) to influence the results of voting. (The credit union, for example, only gives one vote per member and not per account.)
If we subtract the shares of our few larger shareholders the result of voting would actual have better reflected our community.
Estonian House shareholders are also the minority in our community. There are thousands of Estonians of all age groups and Canadians of Estonian heritage for whom our language, culture and heritage are important. Their voice was also not heard 10 years ago when initial plans were hatched by a small group in our community at Tartu College.
I hope that someone will post the shares of larger shareholders, the results of the vote, etc.
Today, the use of ´majority ´seems to be to dispel analysis or criticism of the present situation.
I hope that more social scientists will become interested in researching our Estonian community to understand how we have ended up where we are today.

I am saddened that our community leaders did not fully understand or appreciate the most important function of the Estonian House. It has been and continues to be the best Estonian language immersion project outside of Estonia. We would not have our diverse Estonian community here today without the Estonian House.

In fact the Estonian government should designate the Estonian House a National Estonian Heritage Site for all that it has given to the Estonian cause here and all over the world.

Had it not been for the use of ´majority´ I would not have taken the time to write this long post.

We voted ONCE for the tribute proposal

How many years ago was the vote... let me tell you it was January 27th 2015. Tribute touted underground parking... a tower a section of the building was for the Estonian house.

Tribute walked away.... then can Alterna Oct 2016 made an offer... and also walked away.
Then came the board's fear mongering that the Estonina House was falling apart... and has no useful life left. Strange that it is now 2019 and all is good. The only sad part is that since they Estonian House board is still pushing to sell and move. Even the building report they finally ordered did not have dire issues... all could be upgraded or fixed. Please recal Raimo Remmel was the president during that time... so all the issues - state of the Estonian house falls onto him... not repair or upgrading the building infrastructure... that is why the building fell into disrepair

Please not by the fear mongering it should have collapsed by now

And the blather continues.

The primary question on the table is:
Where is the parking study and why hasn't it been revealed?

Parking availability (real or imagined) has been under discussion since the first town hall meetings. It would be in the best interests for the Madison Project to clearly address the subject
Why is it so hard to present the study?
To DM10 Apr 2019 21:02
Interesting, where do you get your information?
As far as I recall, in all the different Broadview re-development proposals, there was no mention of leaving out the lasketiir.
Maybe reading between the lines blurs your vision.

There maybe but one "legal" lasketiir in all of the GTA. Any changes or modifications to the building/structure that it is domiciled in ... could void it's existence.

Where were was the Pan-American 2015 games shooting competition site built?

When I referred to the "handout" issue I am referring to the issue that they are asking anyone who would like to contribute to the cost of this project, can do so and if the amount is substantial enough they would be have some sort of recognition - such as a plaque, etc. I have followed this project since the beginning and I thought the funds were suppose to come from obtaining a mortgage/loan, fund-raising, if possible but to ask for donations/handouts is just absurd. In the beginning everyone was gunho on getting a new place where the future seemed to look brighter and bigger, but no one thought of the bigger picture at hand - namely parking, upkeep, etc. I hate to say it but the more I read about it - it sounds like it will become more of a money pit!!! what happens then ?? go back to the people who gave donations in the first place and ask for more, good luck !

Read the Due Diligence report12 Apr 2019 12:18
Donors were always assumed to be a source of funding. This is a clip from the Due Diligence report (page 11):

Estonian Centre - Sources & Uses
Sources
1. Sale of Esto House 12,000,000 2. Three Org Support 5,000,000 3. Donors 8,000,000 25,000,000

The biggest questions are whether the $25 million can in fact be raised, and will it cover the project?
Sad13 Apr 2019 11:56
to see that up to $17m of canada's estos' legacy being risked, and possibly squandered into a 'black hole'.
Fundraising11 Apr 2019 11:44
I’m a little surprised that you do not understand that asking for donations IS fundraising. How else do you expect it to happen?
LV11 Apr 2019 15:02
Asking for donations in this manner is not the typical fundraising that some may think. If you want to think of it as your typical "fundraising" method then you might as well set up a Go Fund Me page and do it that way.

Is the budget realistic?13 Apr 2019 12:42
The current sale price of the Esto house at only $12 million is on the low end of the range we've been told. Currently, modest houses around Broadview and Danforth are going for about $1 million. Since there are two houses bundled into the EM sale price, that would mean we would only get $10 million from the sale of the EM. That seems really low, given that it is a huge view lot with a large building close to the subway. What will be left of that once capital gains taxes are removed? We might only get $5 million to use for the new center!

Also, how much has now been spent on lawyers and consultants for the new project planning? Is this on budget? Since the project is delayed, and the first rezoning application was rejected, the total budget projection may be quite out of date.

It would be good to release the parking study, and also a revised budget so that prospective donors can gain confidence that this is a realistic endeavour.
rkomendant@studiok.ca14 Apr 2019 13:19
No the budget is not realistic, never has been. None of the machinations for Madison Centre de Internationale are logical (old tower, shaky foundations, no light, no parking etc.etc). Rumour mill says R&D is up at 4M+ and anyone with bonafide RealWorld credentials has been shunted off to the side, with not even a "come back tomorrow" (Oz). Looks like the Parking quandary may create a way to back away from all this nonsense. Chanting: open-the-books open-the-books!
