Meiusi won't stand for this!

The part where Ilves states 'facilitates entrepreneurial and business opportunities with Estonia while also providing space for programming with the local vibrant community' suggests that cultural activities that are the bread and butter of the current EM are to be of secondary or tertiary importance in the new 'center'.

As a shareholder, I am feeling deceived by the change in purpose. We got the impression from the EM board that we are to move house, not significantly alter the purpose of the house. With Esto school being moved to the weekends, there will be significant difficulty in finding space for hellakesed, hundud, gaidid, skaudid, and Eesti kool if the bulk of the new building is for startup space. Is startup space really that important here? The MaRS tower is practically empty!

You have a point. That said, we must confront some unpleasant truths. It's sad enough that our community is rapidly shrinking. Worse, is that it's character is changing. People not yet pensioners don't speak Estonian very well, if at all!
That gives rise to questions about our identity and the purpose of our institutions. Why build community centre if no one there gives a damn about "eesti keel ja eesti meel"?

I don't agree with comment that no one gives a damn. I had a conversation with a youth in her mid teens in Toronto who is looking forward to going to study in Estonia for a year so that she can be immersed in the language. She is learning the language now, but I haven't heard her speak it as of yet. I'm looking forward to the day when I may have a bit of a conversation with her in Estonian.

I agree, though, that our Estonian speaking population is shrinking, even the active non-speaker contingent may be shrinking too and they tend to be less active anyway. We may need to steady ourselves for an uncomfortable truth that we may not have enough people interested enough to keep the community alive in a newly built Estonian centre.

...with his fluency in Estonian.
That comment was erased.
Why? It's a simple truth.

Your comment is heart-warming!
We should encourage young people like the one you mention.
Let's organise some financial support for them. There's money available for frivolities, like golf tournaments. Why not for students?
I'm prepared to contribute generously. As a student, decades ago, I was the beneficiary of an Estonian scholarship fund based in New York. It was a big help. Now, I'm willing to give something back.

Let's do it ... there are likely others who will join in. How should we get the ball rolling?

Is Mr. Ilves aware that execution of the "exciting initiative" "the International Estonian Centre" involves Toronto Estonians purchasing a parking lot, then converting that parking lot to a park as a donation for the benefit of the City of Toronto?
Kas härra Ilves taipab, et Toronto eestlased ostaksid auto parkla, maksaksid seda ümber konstrueerida parkiks ja seda annetada Toronto linna kasule? Caveat emptor.

Mr Keelmann should attend the November 7th info session so he can get his facts straight about what a POPS (privately owned public space) is.
In Vino Veritas02 Nov 2018 08:07
"Privately owned public space, or alternatively, privately owned public open space, are terms used to describe a type of public space that, although privately owned, is legally required to be open to the public under a city's zoning ordinance or other land use law."
