The editors of Eesti Elu should exercise some authority to restrict content to themes associated with Estonian interests. Otherwise, there's a danger that kooks or misfits can use the opportunity for anonymous commentary as a podium for broadcasting crackpot ideas or venom.

The Eesti Päevaleht recently stopped accepting anonymous commentary and it's probably not coincidental that their policy changed upon a series of appalling comments, in English, from someone called "Siil." He has also appeared in Eesti Elu so, as discomforting as it may be, Siil might be one of our community.

Surely, it wouldn't violate the principle of free speech if the likes of Siil, Väike Manituu, Peter and Maxim were to be discouraged from excessively repeating themselves.

And are you suggesting that EE limit itself to publishing only parochial issues, or only about pensioners and lasteaed? I'm not certain what it is that you are asking for - although I will agree, that certain "kooks and misfits" seem to be the primary commentators on these pages. And as the comments to the Estonian Central Council series show, the spittle and froth have nothing to do with the article posted.

Finally, don't you think that Raudkivi's points about the world's only significant remaining communist regime - and according to last week's Economist a country that is ready to take over much of the world's economy, leading the Economist to suggest that at the very least China be admitted to the G-7 - are not of interest to Estonians, people who have suffered - and some may argue are still suffering - under the delusions of the communist ideology?

The space provided by Eesti Elu for readers' responses is often hijacked by kooks for unrelated purposes. Väike Manituu, for an undiagnosed deficiency, is compelled to jeer at "väliseestlased". Maxim alerts us to secret conspiracies as if he were the man of vision within a kingdom of the blind. Peter likes to chew his anti-semitic cud, expose the Canadian Government as something worse than the Soviet, and take his peers to task for failing to live as he thinks they should.
Is Eesti Elu obliged to give them space? If so, why?

Why should they subscribe to the paper? As far as I know about the subscribers, most only read the print, not on the web. Why have the owners of Eesti Elu given this space for commenting. perhaps it is for improving their product, though, the vast majority of these comments detract fromrather than improve the intial article.

Many newspapers are now requiring paid subscriptions to access their online version. I don't really care to receive the print version but would pay for online access.

I subscribe to the print version - redundantly- because I've read the online edition before it arrives.
