Any comparisons between communist regimes and the Nazis are, quite simply, false.

The Nazis specifically targeted ethnic groups for extermination, while the communists clumsily clamoured for power under the guise of Marxism leaving a wake of massive death and destruction.

The 100 million deaths at the hands of communists were political, whereas the Nazis were genocidal maniacs.

Please do us all a favour, and stop comparing and confusing the two.

PS A little hint: if you want anyone to take you seriously, I'd avoid quoting The Epoch Times and go for something a little bit more legit. Even The Sun.

Well, this sentence is nonsense in more ways than one. Let’s see: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary gives the following definition

Comparison

The act of comparing; an examination of two or more objects with the view of discovering their [i]resemblances or differences[i]

Clearly, to assert that “any comparison is false” is nonsense. Anonymous’ meaning though soon becomes clearer:

[i]“The Nazis specifically targeted ethnic groups for extermination”[i]

Well, some would say that the Communists specifically targeted groups based on Class for extermination (e.g. Class Warfare).

Anonymous, incredibly, goes on to add:

“The 100 million deaths at the hands of communists were political, whereas the Nazis were genocidal maniacs.”

I say “incredibly” because Anonymous appears to be saying that killing for Political reasons is somehow less immoral. Implied is that extermination of a Class (e.g. non-peasants in Cambodia by the Pol Pot regime) is also a lesser crime.

Well, I disagree.

I also find Anonymous’ statements disturbing in the extreme.

As for the victims of Communism, I’m sure that they and their survivors take great comfort in the fact that Anonymous describes their deaths and suffering as “political.”

My assessment of anonymous’ comments: despicable nonsense.

I'm sorry to hear that you find rational viewpoints disturbing.

To say that they are "the same" is just not correct. That's not to say that one was better or worse than the other. They are simply and fundamentally different. Both were heinous, murderous regimes.

Awareness of our history and tragedy in North America and elsewhere does not benefit from this sort of knee-jerk reaction.

And to insult those who don't necessarily agree with your comparisons by saying that we are morally justifying communism regimes is low, petty and frankly sad. Is it any wonder why 95% of Canadians don't know anything about Eesti or the Baltics?
Thank you, Toomas06 May 2008 07:36
You can always be relied upon for morally-balanced and informed commentary.
Here, you've taken a precise measure of Anonymous and his devious, odious message. It smells like something from the outrageous liar, Peter. In any case, if he was proud of his comment, he would identify himself.
Anonymous06 May 2008 08:03
How is it "odious" to differentiate the two regimes and yet respect the victims of both??? How could we possibly expect the respect of others if we don't offer our respect to them??

As for the main subject: Would it not be more appropriate to compare these Olympics to the ones held in Moscow in 1980?
to06 May 2008 10:21
Agreed, comparision to Moscow Olympics is good, so there should be a boycott !

"PS A little hint: if you want anyone to take you seriously, I'd avoid quoting The Epoch Times and go for something a little bit more legit. Even The Sun."

With foolish comments like this, its your credibility that is questioned.

Though Peter is a conservative thinker, his thoughts are probably the most coherent of what's left of the Toronto Estonian community. Just look at the style and substance behind his postings, and you can't fail to admit that once you are through reading them, there is always a morcel of information you never knew about before. Most people just like to criticize others, but he NEVER criticizes anyone, and gives us all food for thought. I agree with Merilo on this occasion, because the Left throughout the Western world has won the ideological struggle for moral higher ground, which includes demoting the Germans to a place far below the moral righteousness that has been bequeather upon Russia. Estonians are just kidding themselves if they think they can prove to themselves that fighting in the side of the Germans in WW2 was an absolute necessity, and by extension the Germans should be acquitted of any moral sin that resulted from their struggle. What suited Estonia in the early 40's was totally the opposite of what suited the rest of the world at the time, and time has proven that Russia got off with a lighter sentence that she deserved. Still, the decision was made by the West, and you must learn to come to terms with it one way or another.

I like the blind response that someone has to be right, and everyone else has to be wrong. It's the foundation upon which the Soviet Union was so successfully built.
Toomas Merilo (An Engineer)07 May 2008 11:44
While many problems have a large number of solutions, there are always more "wrong ones" than correct ones. Elevators, bridges, airplanes, etc. depend on having had the "correct" solutions chosen.

If advocating the "correct" is considered to be as dubious as the foundations of the USSR, then forgive me saying that the considerer errs.

Are you saying that social and historical issues should be examined in the same way that one would examine a mouse trap or faucet?
Bit of a stretch isn't it?

No. No, I’m not. Reread my commentary.

But if there is an issue you wish to discuss off-line, then by all means e-mail me. The e-address I give in the “To:” field is correct and working.
