This plea for help irks me because it is just hot air.
It's nice for President Ilves to come to North America and ask people to help...but when one takes him up on this plea, then there is neither support nor interest in Estonia to engage Estonians abroad. Just a "sorry, there is nothing that I can do" response and attitude.
This is so sad, because there are people abroad who would love to help out Estonia in their small way.
Estonians in Estonia just don't get it. Why are they so closed-minded? Tunnel-vision?

1Yes, I agree. This is an important topic for discussion. It would be helpful if the original commenter could describe in more detail what he/she meant. Perhaps some good suggestions for solutions will result.

3Just some guesses:
1. If the resources and number of job positions are limited in Estonia..... then some Estonians in Estonia may see overseas Estonians as coming to take away jobs from them (instead of them coming to help out). Would overseas Estonians coming to work part-time in Estonia be seen as less threatening? For example, if an Estonian university history department had only one job opening for a professorship in Estonian history......and then that position would be filled by an overseas Estonian "Dr.X" coming back home......some local Estonians may resent the fact that an overseas professor "Dr.X" took the position away from them. Since there are very few Estonian history professorships available globally, the next opportunity to fill such a position may have to wait until "Dr.X" retired, died or moved away.
2. It may interest you to know that locals resenting overseas citizens coming back home is a problem not unique to Estonia. The same is observed in other overseas countries....it is just not widely known. These other countries do not have the same history or situation that Estonia has. So one cannot always blame it on something unique to Estonia.

0What is not being discussed is the decreasing birth rate among Estonians in Estonia. The birth rate of the Russian minority is doing just fine.

The lack of jobs has more to do with poor choices by industry leaders and government.
My understanding is that there is a shortage of skilled labour in Estonia. Those flowing out of Estonia's borders are typically not skilled labour.

0Yes, this is the most important topic of all.....you need a population in Estonia that is working, having at least two children per family, taking care of the elderly, contributing income tax so that the government can continue to pay pensions, etc.etc. You need educated and skilled workers in Estonia.......but I was a bit confused by the last comment. I thought that young adults with talent were getting their university education overseas and then not always coming back to Estonia. Or do the statistics show that the young adults who leave Estonia are mostly less educated?

0Reform policy is for Estonians to chase the euro and become cosmopolitan ... instead of creating work for Estonias by maintaining the kroon which could have been devalued as government monetary policy to help create employment for its citizens.

1Estonia really has to beef up it's information technology sector, which has a great start.
The cyber center needs to grow and develop. Estonia should make it name in this sector.
Let the geeks rule! This will help the economy. I.T. is a global marketplace, Estonia needs to make strides in this sector and become known as the Silicon valley of Europe.

3So where would all of this additional technology take us?
Besides using energy and scarce resources, these technologiesonly provide governments with more invasive observation and population control programs which reduce freedom.
Personally i do not want to see Estonia turned into a slave state, even if this is in some manner achieved voluntarily.
