He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but the fact is he was one of the biggest Estonian Filanthropists there ever was! I heard through my relatives that he funded a lot of Estonian activities; he put up the money that saw the publishing of most of the ouveure of dissident writings smuggled out of Estonia between 1948-85, and he also put up a lot of the funding for the big worldwide protest against Baltic annexation-a gesture that neatly co-incided with that year's Esto Päevad in Sweden. Incidentally, this protest required a ship sailing up as far as Soviet territorial waters. Finally, he injected huge sums of money for the building extentions to Pirita Monastery, and his propping up of the Tallinn City Council in recent years has ensured the economic succes of Estonia's capital during the past 20 years.
