Jaan Kaplinski is a fine writer, best known for his poetry. What he has written here, however, is yet another example of a person of accomplishment sounding silly as he ventures beyond his area of his expertise. It's simply embarrassing to read.

There are many people who want to continue to provoke Russia. There is little that this achieves. At best some people vent anger from 60 or so years ago. However, we don't live in those times anymore. Most decent people have moved on and realized it is no fun trying to make oneself look like an idiot when the rest of the world isn't with you. The same can be said about Russia. Much of the world wants to help Russia move on, but some people continue to want to put the sting into Russia and never let her forget. If they are willing to forget, they won't agree to a time frame or a set of conditions whereby this can be achieved. Therefore they are simply a thorn in the side of progress. One condition of being in the EU should be that we stop criticizing Russia. I think that will become a kind of stabling factor in dealings with Russia in the future. And if Estonians don't comply with that ruling, they should be sanctioned to do so.

Aah! Just when I was becoming to get a little bored, along comes my favourite intellectual, Maxim!

He comes up with a brilliant Foreign Policy for Estonia: [i]“One condition of being in the EU should be that we stop criticizing Russia.”[i]

What a brilliant idea! Give up one’s freedom (of expression)! And still be in the league of free nations.

Maxim digs his own grave even deeper with:[i] “I think that will become a kind of stabling factor in dealings with Russia in the future. And if Estonians don't comply with that ruling, they should be sanctioned to do so.”[i]

So he insists Estonia give up its voice, that Estonia remain silent no-matter-what Russia does. Well what can I say?

Maxim shines in his chosen field. Oh I don’t mean communicative skills, since “stabling” refers to horses, but in displaying his actual IQ.

AsI have said in the past, Toomas, Estonia is fooling itself into believing that it's economy is one of the brighter lights of Europe. I said that three years ago. People in Canada dumped me then, but today they see their faulty logic for what it is. Even you, Toomas, took a shot at me back then. We'll let you off lightly this time; you can eat your words quietly this time and we won't ground you for your mistakes-unlike what some people here have wished all along for me. The second point is this. And again mark my words before you spew junklogic all and sunder. New NATO chief Rasmussen WILL DO EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO ENSURE A SMOOTH PASSAGE OF ACCEPTANCE OF RUSSIA'S INTERESTS IN EUROPE. Let's not be at odds about that. In fact Rasmussen has Masonic backing for all he does, since he is one of Europe's leading Masons! Coupled with Medvjedev's Masonic links, I'd put a bet on suggesting there ain't much that will stop a brokering of interests flowing out of the agreements between Russia and Europe. Just remember who said all this in the first place. Too many people have very short memories.

Maxim changes topics in mid-stream: Kaplinski’s article did not once mention Estonia fooling itself about its economy. It didn’t even mention the economy. But who would expect Maxim to pay attention? (He obviously has no time to read anything but headlines.)

As for his numerous predictions from years gone by, well, if anybody really thinks it’s worth the effort, then “thankfully” they are all archived here on the Eesti Elu Website. The ones I just quickly skimmed reconfirmed in my mind just how vacuous they really are/were (that means empty-headed, Maxim, in case you don’t have a dictionary nearby).

And as for Maxim letting me off lightly: well thank you, Maxim, thank you! Thank you very much.
Maxim02 Aug 2009 08:15
I take it that you agree with me about Rasmussen and NATO since you don't have anything to say about that issue, Toomas. Or if you have some thoughts about the subject, you're not willing to risk sharing them here for fear that they might backfire like all the other predictions from three years ago. Vacous-I understand. Your abrupt change of tone, I don't. Seems as though your initial joy at seeing me back quickly evaporated. And as for Russia generally; well let me say this much. My prediction is that Russia will get her way at least regarding Georgia, and the CIS countries are reorganizing their military strength so as to counterbalance NATO. The Baltics will be marginalized within the next 5 years.

Predictions are worthless, since any mentally-troubled provocateur can make them.

Anything that irritates and disturbs Russians and therby Maksim is very satisfying since they irritate me repeatedly and revenge is sweet.

Too bad that the Russians don't have to stoop so low as you do in order to get a result. The entire world is with Russia from the Second World War onwards. The world is basically leftist by nature, because the Germans are perceived by many to be right-wing and cold-hearted, and there ain't a whole lot one can do to smash preconceptions people hold. Besides, Russia is a big player on the world 's stage, and usually big players get taken more notice of than small players. I think your anger at Russia is one of the byproducts of a broader sentiment that stirs Russia to return on the offensive. If Estonians are not willing to soften their stance against Russia, it will mean a more stinging backlash somewhere down the track.

all of your postings and analyses lose credibility when you come up with this type of stuff

you (who should know better) becomes an apologist for the bolsheviks and stalin, forgetting the sixty million who died in the gulag, slapping all eastern european peoples in the face
are you proud of that ?

was ronald reagan not your hero ?
Maxim04 Aug 2009 12:14
There are people who lap up dishing out hatemongering against the Russians. They think it is limited only to Russians, but my guess is that the sentiment spreads to other racial groups as well. It's interesting to note that in the post-Cold-war era, you choose to call me a Russian sympathizer, when my comments have started and stopped with a message to halt all criticism of Russia and the Russians. Estonia cannot afford to criticize anyone-least of all a country it has traditionally had more than its fare share of problems. No amount of criticizing will alleviate the pain of the past. All evidence of Estonia's "political realism" points to the fact that not only the government of Estonia, but every citizen must show greater responsibility in pursuing peaceful relations with neighbouring countries. I continue to abide by this attitude and will denounce all forms of bigotry and hate language.

you were called " an apologist for the bolsheviks and stalin", that is a far cry from a russian sympathizer

the latter people do deserve great sympathy because they have endured the worst brutalities ... but if the current russian leadership wants to trade on the bolshevik/communist/soviet past, then they deserve only scorn
