I believe that you're right, Justin.
This story would be hilarious if it took place in the theatre rather than the history book.

How can such highly educated people be so hopelessly gullible? It's simply astounding.

The only problem with this article is that it manages to put everyone down-whoever succeeded in capturing one iota of limelight. I disgree with the notion that Hans Kruus was not suitable for the job-he was one of the best intellects of his day, and history has credited him with being a forerunner of the line of thinking for which Lennart Meri took to its logical conclusion. If Kruus had been Prime Minister of his day, I doubt the govt of the time would have landed itself in such a quagmire of problems as it did.

More sh-t from de la Trine!

"...and history has credited [Hans Kruus] with being a forerunner of the line of thinking for which Lennart Meri took to its logical conclusion."

Of course, Maxim can't specify what that might be.

As usual, Maxim is here to tell us that, "I know a lot of stuff that you don't, but I'm not going to tell you what it is."

Curious readers can go to Wikipedia to read about Hans Kruus, the historian and the communist.

You can read all you want about Hans Kruus, because Estonia's best poet and essayist has collected Kruus' finest writing and put it together in book form. The book is available at the Toronto library for anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of this brilliant man.

If you're going to go as far as recommending a book, then give us the title, for Pete's sake!

Where is your sense? Or, perhaps you don't even know the title, somebody just told you that such a book exists and, in your mind, that's enough to make you an expert.

Hando Runnel is familiar. Most of us would place him among the best of Estonian writers, without saying that he is the very best. Be that as it may.

No doubt, some of us will read the particular volume that you recommend. I wonder if you will be among them?

I say that because you once recommended a "brilliant historical theorist". Upon inspection, he turned out to be a mere journalist scribbling about gay liberation and we could see that you hadn't read his writings at all.

From your writing style, we have some doubts about your ability to read, either in English and Estonian. Over time, you have given us plenty of reasons to think that you are as phoney as a three dollar bill.

With that in mind, I'm trundling off to the library with low expectations. I'll get back to you on this.

Maxim's "brilliant historical theorist" is the infamous, Teet Veispak. Mostly, he's known for beating the gay liberation drum. To be fair, he has also had some association with Estonia's historical institute where he taken the Marxist line on Estonian history. He also has a criminal record.

Maxim pushed Veispak into our face to goad us with his Marxist line.

Maxim hasn't read any of Veispak's writings, because he can't. Veispak uses Marxist patois and Maxim has only a rudimentary ability in Estonian.

Yet another potential slander suit! Who's next to be smeared by this group/person? Keep going and eventually you'll run into someone who will take a legal stand against this sort of drive-by smearing. Sadly or perhaps appropriately, this website might be on the receiving end of "it" for not paying any attention to this sort of nonsense. Or does the staff support the unambiguous character assassination of specific individuals based on political views?
oki09 Apr 2009 09:03

Regardless, who do you think has been on the receiving end of the alleged libelous statements? Zhdanov? Vares?

what staff? what support?

What rubbish!
?09 Apr 2009 11:14
Two individuals have been specifically named and smeared on these pages due to the uncontrollable rage of a few people here. Whether you agree with their views or not, you cannot arbitrarily name specific people in the community and drag their names through the mud by connecting them to the postings of one anonymous contributor. As for whether this is libel or slander, I would suggest looking up the definitions. In any case I'm not sure that a judge would accept your defence of "Maxim is jerk" no matter how big of a jerk he might or might not be. Let's not forget that some pretty terrible things have been said about one of the individuals named as "Maxim" and even threats of violence have been implied in the past. Not only is it embarrassing for the community, but it's serious stuff that this website's admins should take a bit more seriously than they currently do.

Some people think that Maxim is a certain person they have known in the past. Has anybody said that EK is a scumbag or idiot, etc? Not that I recall.

Only person who might have a case is Maxim, but he happens to be an anonymous fictitious character.

I acknowledge that expressing points of view that may seen controversial has always called forth a barrage of counterattacks, from persons of varying persuasions. I have never attacked anyone for their difference of opinion, though for some unusual reason this form of respect has not been accorded to me. However, like the editors of EE, I have always believed in freedom of speech for everyone, and as long as that priviledge exists we can be grateful that we live in a free country. As usual, I wish my critics a blessed and holy Easter, even though that too has become a taboo subject in certain quarters-certainly not yet at EE!

I've read and re-read these comments, and to my utter amazement, I find it totally incomprehensible as to what has caused you all to jump on Maxim so ruthlessly. There isn't a hint of rudeness in his comments; yet you others attack him for the useful information he is willing to share with all of us. I am sorry that our community reflects such a degree of hatred and backbiting, and it doesn't surprise me that our days as an ethnic group in Canada are numbered.

Maxim comes here to boast and to provoke. In response, he receives a volley of jeers.
It's an ugly thing to witness and I think that it's outrageous that the editor, Vaado Sarapuu, doesn't put a stop to it.
Those who think that Maxim has been slandered or libelled, don't understand those concepts.

Nobody defends Maxim's past claims. All I'm saying is that in this particular thread Maxim has not said anything that justifies such a heavy handed attack.

BTW, I am pleased to see the new comment feature that revels the people who try to hide behind multiple identities.
Toomas Merilo11 Apr 2009 22:55
Maxim obviously has not been attentive enough to notice the new feature on this commentary site. Namely, that it indicates whenever the same commentator has responded using whatever name.

In this case, it identifies Maxim as now having responded under the name of 'a friend of EK.'

Additionally, it shows Maxim as having posted under two other names, 'Observer' as well as 'A friend of EK':

Samalt IP numbrilt on siin varem kommenteerinud: Maxim (00:07), Maxim (11:28), Maxim (12:33), Observer (23:20), Maxim (00:14)

As 'Observer' Maxim wrote "I find it totally incomprehensible as to what has caused you all to jump on Maxim so ruthlessly."

As 'a friend of EK' he writes with similar cluelessness.

So Maxim and his multiple personalities have been ascertained.
