a very sensible article, but..16 Jan 2008 13:07
Maxim will bark about this for a long time under many different names.
Readers. Fasten your seat-belts.
Glenn16 Jan 2008 16:22
it's a shame this forum is used to sling mud at each other instead of being used as a way to actually discuss the news stories.

I'm almost embarrassed sometimes to be Estonian because of this
I agree with Glenn16 Jan 2008 16:40
Comments should be about the article.
Others should be erased as irrelevant.

i agree with the substance of the article, but I am afraid that what most north American readers fail to understand about European politics is the the growing power base from within Russia. Aslund and many others has contested critics of Russia and rightly so. There isn't anything anywhere within the past 5-10 years that has the cutting edge criticism of Russia that was commonplace during the Cold War. No one is going to argue about the US assistance given to the Baltics, but we will become increasingly despondent in time with the leverage that Russia is going to apply in global affairs. To this my critics have no answers whatsoever.

In case you are interested, Maxim, I could provide you with a list of twenty books published in the past decade about contemporary Russian politics; among others, books such as David Satter's Darkness at Dawn: the Rise of the Russian Criminal State. Yale University Press, 2003.These are as substantial as they are astute and, consequently, interested readers in North America can be as well-informed about Russia as anyone in Europe, including yourself.
Once again, you have come here to tell us that we're ignorant and that you are informed; and that you can predict the future. To that I say b.s. We've never seen any evidence that there is anything concrete behind your vague generalities and predictions. If you know something worth passing on to the rest of us, then put it onto paper and present it to the editor for publication

You are constantly changing to context of what your argument is about. I referred to leading politicicians who have compromised throughout the past 5-10 years, and you bring up the subject of Sattler's book, as if that represents a keynote summary from a horses mouth-someone of the likes of the US President. Sure, Sattler wrote a good book, but his facts have cannot be quoted by most US citizens. His make good fodder for argument, but still, Bush leads the country, and he seems much more interested in keeping Russia on side. Public intellectuals don't need to take this line, but public politicians usually do. Notice also that whilst you prefer to get all steamy and sweaty about in your rebuttle, I hold absolutely no grudges against you or anybody else, other than the fact that it is a little too much to suggest I come here teaching others what to think. I do not do that, nor have I ever done that. I am sorry that you fail to see that, and that all other readers can see the very tactics that you criticize in me as coming through more than clearly in your own posting. Better if you didn't get so worked up in future over nothing.
two questions...17 Jan 2008 15:46
#1) Does Maxim have a point?

#2) Does Maxim have a fan who can tell us what it is? If so, please transcribe his ramblings into ordinary, unambiguous, coherent English. Many will thank you.

Attacking me for your own failings in making Russia accountable via the higher echelons of US politics can only amount to one thing-that you are a closet supporter of Russia!

Today's Wall Street Journal includes an informative article about Putin's Russia:

Thanks for the tip. That is a very interesting article. I wouldn't have believed it if it wasn't from a reliable source, (originally from "Foreign Affairs").

Whoever dismisses conspiracy theories simply because they are too weak to use a little mental muscle against intellectual bullying by people who are too far from the know, realize that they will never ever come close to getting the answers to the world's problems that they beat their heads against walls with for years and years. Most of the people in the know are pleased that you don't know, and like to keep it that way. The Freemasons are a classic example of this attitude, and it wouldn't surprise me if most of the upper echelon of Toronto's well-meaning Estonian pro-active class is in with the Masons of Canada. Most only get to the 3rd degree, but it's enough to work into the hands of those who wish to see the outcomes of Conspiracy theories actually move to a state of fruition.
Good luck, Maxim.19 Jan 2008 10:08
Most boys cast off their fascination with conspiracy theories when they get interested in girls. In your case, Maxim, it appears that your dyslexia, or related learning disabilities, have held you back.
I doubt that you wish to hear good news; but, it's out there if you want it. Recent developments in brain science have shown that the brain is more plastic than previously believed -- that means; learning disabilities can be overcome, to a great extent, with a tailored training program and specialized exercises. You can read more about this in "The Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science." by Norman Doidge, M.D. There is no age limit on improvement and, to a degree, it can be done on a self-help basis. It's an absolutely fascinating read. Good luck with it.

secret society!?19 Jan 2008 11:24
What's so secret about the Freemason's if they are photographed and interviewed by the newspapers? They are about as secret as Korp! Vironia.
You lack judgement Maxim= Lammas=Rasmus.

Seems you didn't even bother to read the article, otherwise you wouldn't have written such a stupid comment!
