As a frequent visitor to Eesti Maja, it's hard not to see the disrepair of the poor old girl. Buckets in the hallway, the floors are coming up in the two larger halls. Perhaps it's time for the juhatus to seriously take up an old idea that is percolating again in the building.

Take down the old building and build a new one. Build space for the schools, the businesses and the organizations that use the building and put condos or life lease apartments or even a combination of both above.

Perhaps this upcoming meeting would be a good time to propose this possibility. If this idea takes root, it will need help and support from as many people as possible.

In a few years, when the tired building gives up, someone else will do it if we don't!!
a good idea15 Mar 2007 12:31
This would be a bold initiative. Rental revenues could cross-subsidize space for community activities and keep our community vibrant for the next generation. It's an extension of the sort of thinking that established Eesti Maja in the first place.

This idea has been kicking around for at least 15 years if not more. FIrst of all Eesti Maja has to have 90% agreement among shareholders and it is common knowledge that they have lost track of more than 10% of the shareholders.
Good luck...in the mean time and during the planning time...it should be at least maintained beyond the point of total embarassment.

I don't think they need 90% in favour. Read the charter.
