GEORG Tuesday December 1 // 6:00 pm at The Royal

Director: Peeter Simm
With: Marko Matvere, Anastasia Makeyeva,
Renars Kaupers, Elle Kull
2007, 107 minutes

Opera singer Georg Ots' captivating, rich baritone made him a household name throughout the Soviet Union. In this biographical drama, his story is seen through the eyes of his former wife and tells of the singer's stratospheric rise to fame, his turbulent marriages, as well as his dealings with the totalitarian Soviet state. He was forced by mobilization to join the Red Army after the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940 and, despite gaining fame in the USSR and Finland, he was denied a chance to perform in the rest of Europe.

I don't think there was anything insulting in your comment. I happen to disagree with some of what you say - and I think its a great film, probably the best Estonian film in a long time. It's kind of old to be presenting it at the festival though.
Unfortunately there are people here who take any criticism of anything posted on this site to be anti-Estonian or pro-Soviet. I'm surprised you weren't labeled as some KGB operative or zionist for your comments!

Is there anything in my previous comment that could possibly be construed as misleading?

The purpose of the film festival is not necessarily to promote European flms, but rather to make Torontonians more aware of Europe and its constituent countries. To increase contacts, arouse interest in things European. Comments shouldn't be censored and everyone has a chance to be as candid as they please. But why go out of your way to badmouth something that is harmless. The audience won't even have to pay admission. But I guess it's in some peoples' makeup to complain and bitch and show how much more in the know they are than the rest.
