Sobriety checks carried out on Estonia's highways over the Midsummer weekend netted a total of 76 drunk drivers, the Police and Border Guard Board reported.

The police had announced on Friday that anyone caught at the checkpoints with blood alcohol level of 0.5 per mil or above would be taken to criminal court.

People still do not seem to understand that driving under the influence of alcohol is wrong and that the police are keeping a constant lookout for offenders, Valter Pärn, head of the downtown Tallinn police station, told ETV on June 24.

The traffic police also had to deal with several speeders, one of whom was a 29-year-old motorcyclist caught on the Tallinn-Narva highway driving at 209 kilometers per hour, nearly twice the summer speed limit.

The police also registered three road accidents in which three people were injured, the board said in a statement.

Beyond that, the weekend passed peacefully for members of rescue services, who mostly had to deal with putting out unattended fires.
