Peter Van Loan Leads Debate on Erosion of Democracy in Ukraine

Ottawa, October 18, 2011 – Tonight, Government House Leader Peter Van Loan led efforts to advance the cause of democracy in Ukraine. As part of a four hour debate in the House of Commons, Van Loan said the Conservative government is concerned about the erosion of rights in Ukraine.

On October 17, Peter Van Loan moved the following motion in the House of Commons that resulted in tonight’s debate:

That a take-note debate on the subject of concerns regarding the ongoing erosion of democracy in Ukraine, including most recently the politically motivated and arbitrary prosecution and conviction of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by Ukrainian authorities, take place, pursuant to Standing Order 53.1, on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.
