Police in Estonia was out in force to ensure public order on May 9.

"We are working with up to 600 additional officers. This does not mean they are all out on patrol, and we are proceeding based on the principle of proportionality. We have visible teams out there, as well as reserves prepared to step in should we spot a major event," said Elmar Vaher, director of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA).

Several thousand people visited the Defense Forces Cemetery on Sunday to place wreaths and candles at the Bronze Soldier monument to commemorate casualties of World War II.

The police intervened in 60 cases where hostile symbolism was displayed, none of which Vaher described as serious. There is no information to suggest major protests or events are planned for May 9 and threat assessments remain low.

The police chief urges people to report hostile insignia, such as letter "Z" or St. George's ribbon.

In the years past, many have come to Bronze Soldier monument during May 9th activities in processions, wearing Soviet army and Russian symbols and uniforms and waving flags. Such activities are prohibited this year. People are allowed to visit the Bronze Soldier and remember those who died in WWII.

The prevent conflicts, the area has been fenced off and access is by public transport only.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) website was temporarily inaccessible on Monday (May 9) after it was subjected to DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) blocking attacks.

According to MFA, the attacks started at 7.49 a.m. "RIA's CERT-EE monitoring shows that today at 7.49 a.m. blocking attacks were started against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' (MFA) website. This means that due to malicious queries overwhelming the website, the page was inaccessible, the rest of the ministry's work was not disrupted in any way," MFA said.

By noon the website has been restored. No information was given about the attackers.
