If the environmentalists are correct that Earth's ecosystems are deteriorating at a frightening pace, then why are we humans thriving like never before?

That, in a nutshell, is the "environmentalist's paradox" that McGill University researcher Ciara Raudsepp-Hearne and her colleagues set out to explore in a recently published paper that is getting some high-profile attention around the world.
