EstDocs started its 2019 season with the Short Film Competition presentation in Toronto on Friday. Held at Tartu College, film fans had the opportunity to explore Estonian culture through featured short films from Canada, Estonia, France and Sweden. This year total of 21 short films under 7 min were accepted, 14 in professional category and 7 in amateur category.

Professional short film entries are judged by the three member jury consisting of James Crowe (Cinematographer, Professor at Niagara College), Kaisa Kasekamp (Animator, Film-maker) and Kai Kaljo (Film-maker & Artist).

Amateur entries are screened and prizes awarded by the committee selected by the event's main sponsor Tartu College. Regardless of the category, all entries were publicly screened on Thursday night, October 24th. Audience members were given an opportunity to vote for their favorite short film. The Short Film Night was hosted by Keltie Thomas.

The winners of the professional category, amateur category and audience award will be announced during the EstDocs Gala at Toronto Estonian House on November 8th. Reception starts at 6pm, awards will be announced at 7pm.

In addition to the award ceremony, the gala will feature "Everyday Mysticism / Vello Salo. Igapäevaelu müstika", Jaan Tootsen's film about well known Catholic priest Vello Salo, a story about an old and wise man who is preparing to leave this world and, thus, faces many personal and delicate questions.

The EstDocs documentary film festival takes place from Nov 8 - 10, 2019 at various venues in Toronto. Printed programs are available at the Estonian House, Tartu College and Estonian Toronto Credit Union or visit www.estdocs.com for more information.
