A study decades ago confirmed something that Estonians took for granted. In comparing architecture students by national heritage, Estonians had by far the highest proportion studying that discipline of any ethnic group in Canada. It would be a certain eventuality that the contribution of Estonian architects to Canada, more specifically Toronto, would be the subject of a book. Jarmo Kauge, of the Etonian Museum of Architecture has compiled a thorough overview of the work of these architects. The focus is mainly on those whose education was interrupted by WWII or who acquired their knowledge and skills in Canada in the early post-war years. Thus the works of Mihkel Bach (1916-1972), Ants Elken (1917-2011), Uno Prii (1924-2000), Elmar Tampõld (1920-2013). Taivo Kapsi (1935-1967) and Henno Sillaste (1936-2013) are highlighted. Bach and Elken were also architecture faculty members at the University of Toronto. According to Kauge, Estonian architects have played a highly significant role in determining the actual visible presence of a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. Contributing to sections of the book are Piret Noorhani, Graeme Stewart, Evan Manning, Alfred Holden and Thomas Tampõld.
