Skype has popularity among criminals as well and not just because it's cheap. It is also thought to be safe from wire tapping and the ever-acute ears of the authorities - but that's not entirely true.

In a land exchange case last year, lawyer Raivo Laus inquired about the eavesdropping technology used by KAPO, the national intelligence agency. It turned out that it is possible for calls between Skype and cell phones or land lines to be monitored, Eesti Ekspress reported.
