I personally am exceedingly happy to see construction finally underway. It is a complex project. Covid, TTC ransomeware attacks, etc. could not have been foreseen. I wish the author would get past his/her sniping and celebrate the fact that the construction is underway.
The reality is ...09 Mar 2022 12:23
If KESKUS is successful, I will be happy for the Estonians in Toronto. Logic dictates, though, that it likely will not stand the test of time. Building a glass arch over a vibrating subway tunnel is not prudent and will task future generations with hardship. I feel like KESKUS is the precipice of a cliff and we, like lemmings, are running towards it with gusto. I feel pain every time I think about it.
:09 Mar 2022 06:37
I'm wondering how realistic it is that donors come up with the budget shortfall? I wouldn't be surprised if the final budget will be closer to 50 or 60 million. Sale of the EH netted only 12? Are we going to end up with a hole in the ground?
KESKUS is SNAFU09 Mar 2022 17:02
We will all have died by the time Keskus is built, or have relocated to the new mecca in Collingwood or other points in the 705 area code. Let's talk about promises made and promises broken. Look's like the Toronto Estonian School will not be able to utilize the Keskus location since it is more of a liability than a revenue generating for the new international Estonian business centre. Let's welcome globalism and destroy our grassroots community. Keep sending in the clowns, this is better than any comedy show.
Just Sad09 Mar 2022 18:22
Just sad, kahju ! Costs will only go up and up over time, even those who have donated and believe that this was a good idea will have no more money to give. Why don't we just sell of our whole community, oh wait ! we are. I am sad and heart broken that we have come to this. I am and always have been proud to be a Canadian Estonian and my roots. But I am divided and not sure how to feel about this massive division within our community. My personal opinion is we should of just stayed where we where and invested in the Broadview location, and for alot less of an expense ! Just my opinion .

in a Lauren Bacall tilted smile, inspecting her manicure: "Bad Ju-Ju all around". After what, 1,000 years of slavery, Toronto Estonians, living a 1st-world life (oh, and tell me not, you are thriving on the backs of what our hard working refugee parents provided for us with love and devotion)have finally lost our bearings of who we are. Yes. Sadness all around. WAKE UP!

To R. Komendant - Sadly, your commentary is worthy of derision and/or laughter. Yes, we were fortunate that our parents landed in Canada. Truly so. However, many worked hard and achieved. No doubt our parents were hard working immigrants. However, our success was due to our hard work and efforts. Acquiring an advanced degrees, professional credentials, etc. was something we did. Your comments about this being "on the backs of our hard working refugee parents" thus makes no sense. I might suggest that you need to wake up from your slumber. I hope you have made a donation to Keskus?

R.K. is a Patriot with Logic beyond the tripe you post. Those who call home(Keskus)a glass building built on a hole, should not throw rocks.

Follow the yellow brick road on the photo to - nowhere! I wonder what this estimated $41 million would have built at 958 Broadview. But no, there was no money for that. No call for proposals. Lembit Tork's concept would have been a reality by now! And unified the community instead of dividing us.

Maybe we should rename this vanity project the Ellen Valter Centre, as Mr Prozes suggested?

Your go f yourself attitude is a perfect summation of Keskus supporters attitude since its conception.

Yet the KESKUS team was able to raise $41 from Estonians worldwide. The pitiful folk who continue to deride those leading this project represent the worst of our community whom we all hope will disappear quite soon.
Fake news12 Mar 2022 16:15
KesKus have not raised anywhere near 41 million. The budget is 41, but they don't have the money. They hope they can do it, but NBCU will likely have to step in and loan them the money, maybe in exchange for 50 years rent free office space. The actors change but the schemes will stay the same as 50 years ago.
Awwww12 Mar 2022 17:01
Fake news seems soooo discouraged. Probably a member of ‘friends of the Estonian house’. Last go fund me they did raise a pathetic 50k to ‘save’ the EH. You know why people didn’t donate there…bc they have brains and recognized a losing investment. KESKUS has raised 10s of millions from all over. People support KESKUS. And it’s ok if you naysayers don’t see the light now. We will welcome you back later. With open arms.

Your hubris is not becoming of you. Your jabs at people who are hurt is a sad statement.

Listen to the statements of the feelings of injustice and learn from these. Recognize the pain you have caused. When you force a person to do something against their will, they will carry that hurt as a heavy stone in their heart, as did our parents, who were forced to flee their homeland. Half the community has been left behind.

We will continue without you – it will not be “build it and they will come”. We will not come, because it is too painful.

Your thinking is: “We will build this beautiful building and you will come and enjoy it, because it is so beautiful.”

But we will not come, because our needs were not considered, this building does not serve us.

People will be back. People with positivity, patriotism, and love of their culture. The very best of our community. Those that choose not to come back…seeya! They are doing the rest of us a favour.

The PROJECTED budget is 41 million, meaning it might go to 50 million or more. People are fed up with being asked to donate even more. How deep are your pockets? Where does this end?
An Observer13 Mar 2022 11:20
To KeskusMis: The donors to Keskus have not been confused. They donated to the Keskus project knowingly and willingly. Don't for a moment assume these same amounts could have been collected for Broadview Ave. Let's look forward and embrace this initiative. The EH has been sold, so why dwell on what could have been done there?
cautionary tale13 Mar 2022 16:40
There's a saying about putting all your eggs in one basket.

"[X] recently helped negotiate a deal to purchase an unfinished, would-be Hellenic Centre ...it was put on the block when the funds needed to finish its construction dried up. 'We all know 2008, 2009 were bad years for the economy. And so donations stopped coming,' explained Nikonas Georgakopoulos, past president of the Greek Community of Toronto.
But the building was zoned by the city as a cultural centre, so it couldn't be sold for commercial purposes. For [X] it was a perfect opportunity."

Truth rears its ugly head15 Mar 2022 07:22
On April 25, 2017 there was a vote taken about the future of Estonian House. Of the 3207 votes cast, 2148 votes were for selling the house and 1059 were against it. If you remove the block votes that the Estonian Credit Union,Estonian Foundation of Canada, Tartu College,Toronto Men's Choir and Estonian Scout Organization had in the selling the house vote, then we would still have our Estonian House today. In other words, the popular vote was still against selling the Estonian House. The Keskus project leaders to this day, still spin the lie that the entire Toronto community is behind this project. So here we are, 5 years later with a split community, no Estonian House, no E-Store, no Kohvik, no home for the Estonian School, no Shooting range, no art gallery. But we do have a 41 million dollar dream to pursue. Kai%@!#$&

A vote was taken, your side lost. Stop crying about it already. Grow up, pretend to be an adult, and move on. If you don’t like it, go away. We dont need you or even want you if you’re just going to be a a bastion of negativity, conspiracy, and division.
TEM15 Mar 2022 09:38
The Toronto Estonian Men's choir voted not to sell. How did their votes end up on the 'for selling list'?
Democracy?15 Mar 2022 10:00
We live in a supposed democratic country and yet the Estonian Credit Union Board (all eight board members) in a block vote voted to sell the Estonian House without asking their shareholders their opinion on the matter. Legally, yes the board had the right to make that decision. But they failed to ask their shareholders what they felt (democratically speaking). I guess this is part of the New World Order. Oligarchy rules!

Yep, this is how it works, unfortunately. Your only option is to get elected to the NBCU board and take it from there. You have to submit your candidacy to the board beforehand and bus in enough supporters to get elected. The other side did it just like this, most recently with EAC, also ESK 20 years ago. This is how it works, you have to be better in this game.
Democracy?15 Mar 2022 13:20
R.R. Eesti Maja Esimees ja E.V. of NBCU spear-headed the sale of our community treasure. Why hasn't R.R. not thrown Rotalia(Rotti)Maja onto the same pire? Roti Maja must be worth 5-6 Mil. This would surely help in the short-fall of Revenues to complete the Keskus. Then Rotalia could join their fellow friends in solidarity in the Tartu College Bunker. Why have they gotten a pass compared to Peetri Kirik and the rest of our vannishing community?

The teachings of L. Frank Baum16 Mar 2022 08:19
This author wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Using the line "There is no place like home" Dorothy along with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion search for the Wizard that will take Dorothy back home to Kansas. What the author was saying is that you really need three important things to achieve your objectives in life. Brains- to make the smart and right decisions for the benefit of all, heart- to understand everyone's needs and desires and courage to tell the truth all the time. The Wizard of Oz was just smoke and mirrors. There really is no place like home.
