Thank you for writing/sharing your thoughts.

Well said. I definitely miss the E-Store and believe the instant notice is illegal according to Canadian law. Especially since rent was paid for the winter months. The board seems to be desperate in their need to cause dissonance in the community.

I don't think it's dissonance. They want to get their way, on their terms. A holistic approach would take a bit more time, but they would have a much easier go with things. When you ram things through, people's noses get out of joint and they don't feel like they are part of the process.

For what it's worth, I will include an excerpt from Myrna Kostach's book, "All of Baba's Children". Myrna Kostach was born in Edmonton, a second-generation Ukrainian-Canadian, and is a free-lance writer living in Edmonton, Alberta. Her excerpt resonates very strongly with our own Toronto Estonian community's struggle with surviving in the melting pot of a multicultural Canada.
"It is sometimes ridiculous to see a young professional man or woman, trained in all the advances of scientific thought, insist that his children celebrate the old pagan Christmas and Easter customs, whose origins go back far into the most primitive kind of pagan life. For older people, living on the land, these customs had significance- they were connected with their life on soil, with the harvest and planting. In the new country, these customs were the only link they had with life in the old country. But for the younger generation, a sort of romantic nostalgia coupled with the stigma of the word "foreigner" sometimes causes them to take refuge in a narrow nationalism whose pride is the perpetuation of the old culture... Nevertheless, for most of the younger generation, these customs belong on the stage, in books, not in everyday practice."

What's so ridiculous about my Christian Estonian identity? Why shouldn't I bask in it?
It does you no harm at all and you have no reason to jeer at us.

I agree, all belief systems need to be respected.

On the subject though, I paused for thought since I remember learning that the Teutonic Knights brought Christianity to the Baltic region by sword as a tool of conquering lands. It is also recorded in history that they introduced Estonians to and plied them with beer to keep them docile and manageable as a newly subjugated people.

Though Christianity is well established, might we consider that we are victims of what has been dubbed as the Stockholm Syndrome? Estonians had an established and holistic belief system before this, that was suppressed, ridiculed and rooted out by the conquerors.

We have much to relearn from our forefathers.

For what it's worth, I don't agree with the author you cite, Jaak. We need to dig deeper than the customs, to the deeper meaning of life that was imbued in the traditions. If we look at Christianity, it has the same shortcomings of traditions that have lost meaning for the younger generations.

I particularly like A. H. Tammsaare's "Põrgupõhja uus Vanapagan"- where he states ( I will paraphrase)- "There are people who call themselves Christians, but don't act like Christians, and then there are people who don't consider themselves Christians, but act like Christians."
Ja siis on teine Tammsaare tarkusetera-
"Inimene on ju niisuke, et valeta talle kas või kõige hullem asi ette, kohe usub, aga katsu tõtt rääkida – kahtleb, pinnib, uurib, nõuab tunnistajaid"

Most would agree with Tammsaare's commonplace observations: that some Christians ought to be fed to the lions; some atheists are decent people, and some people are gullible and obdurate.
So what?

Mulle meeldib kuidas Lible Kevade's ütles:

Ja ühte ma sulle ütlen - ei kannata siin ilmas ükski sunnik, kui temale tõtt öeldakse. Aga valeta! Vaata, valeta! Mjah. Siis oled sa õige mees.
