Russian attitudes?04 Feb 2012 13:54
No one knows what Russian attitudes really are because Russia doesn't have a free press.
What you're talking about here is Government attitudes, or more precisely, Putin's attitudes.

Whether or not Russian hostility towards the Baltics is declining is a matter of attitude and motivation, which outsiders aren't best placed to determine. But Russia's ongoing distortions and outright lies about the Baltics are clearly visible matters of almost daily fact.

For many years I have taken it on myself to post in English language Russian media forums, factually countering Baltics-related misinformation appearing in their articles and forums. While this obviously does not change the prejudices of die-hard ideologues, I believe it does provide insight into Baltic realities to general readers, and goes some way to counter toxic Russian propaganda. The fact that this information is able to be presented in Russia's own propaganda vehicles is particularly gratifying.

Obviously the world's Baltic population is not large, and the number amongst them who are appropriately proficient in English and who are interested in taking the debate to Ivan is even smaller. But I believe that those who do have the ability, interest and time could provide a valuable service to clarify Baltic realities to the world.

One prime website is Russia Today. It is a quality outlet for Russia's take on events, and frequently publishes anti-Baltic articles. A reasoned debate clarifying Russian misinformation about the Baltics' past and present is readily tolerated by its management. There are also other Russian websites that run in English and other languages, that would offer similar opportunities.
