Thank you Laas for writing this excellent opinion piece! Hopefully this is the start of a long overdue public condemnation of crimes of communism and recognition for the 6 million or more Canadians who have suffered under communist regimes.

Here is an excerpt from the National Capital Commission also posted on the Tribute to Liberty website www.tributetoliberty.ca
EXCERPT of the DRAFT MINUTES:
Board members conveyed their support for the
project but expressed reservations with the wording of the proposed title of the commemoration. They felt its scope could be broader to better reflect the experience of all Canadians who have fled different forms of oppressive regimes. They felt that the theme of “Canada as a land of Refuge” needed to
be reinforced. The Board directed staff to work with the project proponents on adapting the title so that the project could move forward.
On a motion of Frieda Martselos, seconded by
Richard Aubry, IT WAS AGREED that the general concept of a commemoration to the victims of totalitarian communism be approved. The Board, however suggested, that the title be modified, in consultation with the proponents, to be more inclusive of those who have suffered under oppressive regimes in general.

i find that dissapointing. although, all opressive regimes are terrible, totalitarian communist from the Stalin days need to be addressed for many millions. i don't see the move towards changing the name of the monument in the right direction....i see it as a cheer for Canada...not a memorial for the true victims.

also......Russia is openly embracing Stalin and calling him a hero and an important figure for the revolution? I still get disgusted at the photos of young russian politicians standing in front of a Stalin statue with huge smiles on their faces, like they think they are hot stuff.

We must, as a country, make a stand for those millions of people who were murdered at the order of this Creep. We can not allow history to show that this man was a hero? Canada....get some balls and do the right thing.
