According to freshly released figures from the 2011 census, 30,000 Estonian citizens have residential dwellings abroad as well as in Estonia, spending at least three months out of the year in each home.

“That is in line with the fact that 25,000 people work abroad as commuting workers,” Ene-Margit Tiit, head of methodology for the census project, said on Statistics Estonia's blog today.

The most popular destination for a second dwelling is Finland, which attracts the most new Estonian immigrants and commuting workers. Russia, other Scandinavian nations and the UK also figure high on the list.

A total of 6 percent of Estonians own a second home, with two-thirds of the second properties located in Estonia.
