YLEWikileaks documents acquired by YLE, the United States has drawn attention to the security risks associated with Finnish ferry routes. Diplomatic cables claim that ferry passengers, as well as shipping containers sent to the US, are rarely checked. Authorities say port and ferry security have been improved since the cable was written.
Thousands of people and various goods travel daily on ferries between Finland, Sweden and Estonia, which are all part of the Schengen Area. The US Embassy reflected on the terrorism-related risks of that arrangement.
