While a troubled economy pushes foreign affairs to the back burner, we live in challenging times and the international picture demands our attention. How do we deal with a rising Communist China? Is the West prepared for the long battle against radical Islamic terrorists? How do we respond to an authoritarian Russian state? What would Winston Churchill think; what would he do?

The Obama Administration, only months after Russia invaded its sovereign neighbor Georgia, hit what Hillary Clinton referred to as a “reset button” offering the Russians a new and accommodating foreign policy. President Obama weakened Poland’s missile defense shield, and recently President Obama was captured “off-microphone” assuring Russian President Medvedev that America would have more “flexibility” after the November election to further weaken Western Europe’s defenses. Does the West have a clear-eyed view of world affairs? What can we learn from the great man of the 20th Century, Winston Churchill, who sounded the alarm about threats unseen to the public eye? Churchill understood the terrible price that is paid when democracies rely on appeasement.

Robert Pettengill, Churchill scholar, will set the stage for a conversation explaining Churchill’s significance as a historical figure. U.S. Representative Thaddeus McCotter, will discuss the threats facing the West and what America’s foreign affairs response should be. McCotter, the co-chairman of The Central and Eastern European Caucus in the U.S. Congress, is an expert in foreign affairs and has delivered prescient remarks about the rise of Russian authoritarianism
