US troops may stay longer in Europe than planned

Two of the remaining 4 US combat brigades left in Europe were supposed to move to US bases over the next year. 43,000 US troops are currently posted in Europe, down from 60,000.

AFP reported that General Bantz Craddock, Commander of US forces in Europe has recommended postponing the move by a a year. The troops are needed for "security theatre engagement". The cutbacks had been recommended by former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.Admiral Michael Mullen, Charman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says the US has the need to stay engaged with its allies in an era of "persistent conflict".

General David McKiernan, US Army Commander in Europe also noted the uncertainties posed by a "resurgent Russia".
