UK general election delivers hung parliament

The UK will have a hung parliament after neither of the two biggest parties won an overall majority in yesterday's general election.

The Conservative party, led by David Cameron, has the largest number of seats declared so far, 290, compared to 247 for Labour. The Liberal Democrats have 51 seats, six fewer than in the last election in 2005.

The results mean that neither party has enough seats, 326, for a majority in parliament on its own.

The Conservatives could form a majority with the Liberal Democrats but are expected to try to form a minority government with the support of Unionists in Northern Ireland.
