Today, on January 11, the Tuticorin magistrates’ court announced its verdict to sentence Estonian anti-piracy guards to five years imprisonment. Following the hearing, the men were taken directly from the courtroom into detention. A written verdict has been officially communicated and lawyers have begun examining it. The Foreign Ministry has informed the families of the ship guards of the verdict.

According to Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand, the verdict was unexpected. “From a human standpoint, I was undoubtedly hoping for a positive outcome, but regardless of the verdict, we will continue to act in the name of returning the men home,” Foreign Minister Kaljurand said.

We will continue to discuss subsequent steps with Indian authorities, including India's Ambassador to Estonia.

The Estonian Embassy's consul was present at the hearing and is helping the ship guards with details on site. The ship guards must make a decision on whether to appeal the court's verdict within 90 days.
