Top 10 Green Christmas tips
16 Dec 2008 EWR Online
This holiday season, Canadians have the opportunity to join together to help the environment. One Million Acts of Green is a unique collaboration between CBC and Cisco with the idea that one small act can make a big difference. Participants can visit the site and register their acts to contribute to the goal of one million. One Million Acts of Green has introduced new acts to help make this holiday a green one:

1. Avoid Excess Packaging - Packaging is excessive at the best of times, and it gets worse around the holidays when so many gifts are exchanged.

2. Turn Lights Off When Not In Use - Turn off the holiday lights in and outside of your house at bedtime. The simplest acts can often be the biggest.

3. Replace Your Incandescent Holiday Lights With Seasonal L.E.D. Lights - L.E.D. lights are 95% more energy efficient than incandescent holiday lights. They also last seven times longer (about twenty years) and will save you money.

4. Recycle Your Christmas Tree - Most municipalities offer a Christmas tree recycling program that will chip your tree into mulch and compost it. Check with your municipality for details.

5. Reuse or Make Your Own Wrapping Paper - You can make a real difference and save some money this holiday by wrapping your presents in recycled or reused wrapping paper, or even better by making your own. And, you can be creative!

6. Send an e-Card Instead of a Paper Card - This might not be traditional, but it certainly saves money and helps the environment. You could always send paper cards (printed on recycled or FSC-certified paper, of course) for close family, and send the rest of your holiday wishes via e-card.

7. Avoid Using Disposable Plates, Glasses and Cutlery - If you're entertaining over the holidays, say no to disposable plates, glasses and cutlery. All they do is add more waste to landfills!

8. Buy Carbon Offsets - If you can't reduce your impact this holiday season, neutralize it by purchasing carbon offsets. More information on carbon offsets can be found at www.onemillionactsofgreen.com

9. Donate Clothes and Other Used Goods - One persons trash is another persons treasure. Give your old stuff away, and consider buying items second-hand.

10. Replace Plastic Bags With Reusable Bags - When holiday shopping, bring your own reusable bags with you. Plastic bags may be free, but they cost us plenty when it comes to the environment.

Change can start with just one person. One action. That's what One Million Acts of Green is all about. As we combine individual acts, the positive impact on our planet is much greater. This is an opportunity for people to come together to share, to learn and to work toward a common meaningful goal. Cisco calls this the Human Network Effect: a network of people with the power to change the world in which we live and work. Cisco technology helps people communicate in ways never before imagined. Over the network, people can come together and transform business, communities, governments, schools and lives. When the human network sets out to solve a problem, the result is a Human Network Effect.
