For a real winter wonderland, Prague is the place to go. The largest and most popular markets in the city are held at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, just a five-minute walk apart.

Wooden huts sell traditional handicrafts such as embroidered lace and wooden toys. Of course, Czech beers Pilsner Urquell, Budvar and Staropramen are on sale too.

The markets, which run from November 30 to January 12, 2014, are even open Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

If you fancy a festive drink to rest your tired feet from browsing the 100 or so stalls, head for the famous Café Louvre near Wenceslas Square, which Albert Einstein and Franz Kafka once frequented.

THE DEAL: Lowcostholidays is offering a special package for £180pp, departing Manchester for three nights’ B&B at the Hotel Kavalir.

2 TALLINN, from £281pp for two nights

With its medieval squares and cobbled streets, Tallinn in Estonia is one of the most magical settings for Christmas markets.
