It is of no small significance that the invitation to the international launch of "The New Cold War: How the Kremlin Menaces both Russia and the West", by Edward Lucas comes to us from British Baltic organizations. The British-Lithuanian Society, British-Latvian Society and the British-Estonian Association are hosting the event, to be held on Monday, February 4, 20078, at University College, London, at the UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies.

The launch invitation reads in part:

This is an incisive and disturbing account of Russia's drift to
autocracy over the past ten years that shows how the Kremlin's
increasingly aggressive approach threatens the Baltics, the rest of
Europe, and America. As the Kremlin bares its teeth, The New Cold War explains both the tactics used and the West's weaknesses.

Mart Laar, former Prime Minister of Estonia: "Edward Lucas knows what he is writing about. His experiences in the former `evil empire' are a sound basis for this account of the start of the New Cold War".

Mr Lucas is familiar to readers of our newspaper as Deputy International Editor and Central and Eastern Europe Correspondent for The Economist. Ed Lucas has been covering this region since 1986. He was Moscow Bureau Chief for The Economist from1998 to 2002 and previously was a correspondent for The Independent (in Prague, Washington DC and USSR) and for the BBC World Service. He is a frequent contributor to British and foreign radio and television programmes, and also writes for news outlets in the Baltic States.

Mr Lucas was based in the Baltic States from 1990 to 1994, covering the collapse of the Soviet Union and, from 1992, as the managing editor and major shareholder in The Baltic Independent, a weekly English-language newspaper published in Tallinn.
