Symbolic Tallinn TV Tower Reopens
12 Apr 2012 EWR Online
U.S. Embassy, Tallinn, April 12, 2012
The newly remodeled Tallinn TV Tower (Tallinna Teletorn.) has just reopened to the delight of Estonians and visitors alike. This 314 meter-tall tower that dominates the skyline in Tallinn’s Pirita District was built in preparation for the 1980 Olympic Games and had been closed for renovations for five years.

In addition to its magnificent observation deck and a view that reaches to Helsinki on a clear day, the remodeled tower boasts of a well-reputed restaurant as well as an opportunity to receive an overview of pivotal moments in Estonian history. The television tower played an integral role in the power struggles that unfolded in this country in 1991 when a group of Estonian radio operators risked their lives to defend the tower and keep the airwaves open— bullet holes that bear mute testimony to the efforts of this nation to obtain its freedom remain visible at the tower’s base. Ambassador Polt and members of the Embassy staff are all planning to visit the tower soon and we will certainly report back on the experience.
