Armas Maiste – piano, Roddy Ellias – guitar, Saturday, January 16 - 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Armas Maiste may not be a household name, but he is truly one of Canada's living legends of music. He is equally gifted in both jazz and classical music and has influenced and mentored many of Canada's brightest younger pianists including Toronto's Dave Restivo and Montreal's Eric Harding. Maiste started the jazz studies program at McGill University and then moved to Toronto where he taught at Humber College for several years. He has performed all over the world in both classical and jazz genres and has represented Canada at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Winner of the 2009 TD Canada Trust Ottawa International Jazz Festival Award of Distinction, Roddy Ellias' music has been described as “exquisite” by the Canadian jazz author Mark Miller, “brilliant” by Bill McBernie in Planet Jazz, and “genius” by legendary jazz saxophonist Bud Freeman. Roddy has performed and/or recorded with Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, Nat Adderley, Jimmy McGriff, Red Norvo, Bud Freeman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Cleo Laine, Johnny Dankworth, Guido Basso, Chelsea Bridge, The National Arts Centre Orchestra, and Michel Legrand and The Montreal Symphony.

The reuniting of Armas Maiste's musical connection with Roddy Ellias after several years promises to be a magical musical event not to be missed!
