Remains of 236 Latvian soldiers who died in Russia's Pskov Oblast during World War II were relocated to Latvia yesterday, informs LETA.

Talis Esmits, the head of the "Legenda" organization overseeing the operation, told LETA that the remains of the soldiers who had fought on the German side were found in 2013. Exhumation of the remains, analyses and other procedures took two years in total.

It has been determined that the soldiers died in battle from March to June 1944, said Esmits. Remains of all soldiers repatriated to Latvia have been identified.

The Brethren Cemetery's Committee and "Legenda" participated in relocation of the soldiers' remains to Latvia, in cooperation with Russia's "War Memorials" organization.

Latvian Defense Ministry and Russian Defense Ministry have been both informed about the operation.

According to Esmits, the remains of Latvian soldiers will be interred in Brethren Cemetery in Lestene.

A full list of the identified soldiers will be printed in the government's official newspaper "Latvijas Vestnesis".
