POLAND, 27 NOVEMBER 2013
TO THE INTERNATIONAL DEMOCRATIC COMMUNITY
TO INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANISATIONS
TO THE UKRAINIAN PUBLIC

STATEMENT

by Polish human rights defenders, Solidarity veterans, members of underground organisations of the Fighting Solidarity, and the association Solidarity 2010

WE express OUR SUPPORT to the popular protestS IN UKRAINE demandING to sign the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union

Polish democratic organisations have always supported the Ukrainians in their struggle for national independence and democratic rule. They also support the effort of Ukraine to integrate with Europe.

Recently we had been observing with great confidence and satisfaction the pro-European course of Ukraine and the joint coordinated actions of the President and the opposition forces aimed at signing the Association Agreement with the EU.

The latest events, entailed by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to suspend the conclusion of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, have caused indignation and protests among the Ukrainian society concerned about the future of their people and country, the destruction of foundations of democracy and a threat to the state's independence on the part of Russia. The eastern neighbour of Ukraine does not hesitate to apply the tools of economic warfare to corner the Ukrainian side into taking forced and disadvantageous steps.

Sharing the concerns and aspirations of protesters in Kiev and in many other Ukrainian cities, as well as of other countries who support Ukraine's aspirations for integration with Europe, the veterans of Polish oppositional and patriotic organisations express their solidarity with patriots of Ukraine who organise rallies all over the country demanding a better future for their children and grandchildren.

The European multinational community cannot and must not stay indifferent to the developments in Ukraine whose people manifest their desire to integrate with Europe!

We appeal to the leaders of the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, to members of the European Parliament, to the United States and the NATO: do not yield to Russia’s dictate, lend your support to the fight of the people of Ukraine for the Association Agreement with the European Union to be signed in Vilnius on 29 November 2013.

In this situation we urge the President of Ukraine to use his constitutional powers to cancel the illegitimate decision of the Government of Ukraine and, at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius on 29 November 2013, to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, which would allow Ukraine to join the European community of democratic nations.
