Paet to discuss European security with OSCE Foreign Ministers

On Tuesday and Wednesday Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will attend the 17th meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) taking place in Athens.

Paet said that topics to be addressed at the meeting in Athens include problems related to the Russia-Georgia crisis and the frozen conflicts in Moldova and South Caucasus. “In addition to the comprehensive and all-encompassing developments in security dialogue agreed upon in the spring of this year in Corfu, we must continue to move forward with fulfilling responsibilities accepted within the framework of such agreements and resolving crises,” said Foreign Minister Paet. “Within the context of the OSCE we must especially pay attention to matters related to South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Transnistria as well,” he said.

In Athens the foreign ministers will also discuss freedom of the press and human rights as well as increasing the effectiveness of the OSCE’s work, election monitoring, and the activities of OSCE missions.

Within the framework of the OSCE foreign ministers’ meeting, the Estonian foreign minister also has many bilateral meetings scheduled. Paet will meet with the foreign ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Cyprus. While meeting with his Moldovan colleague, Paet will sign the implementation protocol for the agreement on the return of illegally residing persons between Estonia and Moldova. There will also be a meeting of the Baltic and Benelux foreign ministers will the foreign minister of Georgia.

In 2010 the chairmanship of the OSCE will go to Kazakhstan.
