Obama more popular than any Canadian politician

In a Strategic Council Poll, commissioned by Canadian Television (CTV) and the Globe and Mail (G&M) American Democratic Party presidential candidate Barack Obama has a higher popularity level than any Canadian politician.

Obama polled 26%, Canadian Prime Minister (conservative) Stephen Harper came second with 21%, Democratic also-ran Senator Hilary Clinton received 16%, Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jack Layton was chosen 9%, Québec separatist PQ leader Gilles Duceppe had 6%, Canadian Liberal leader Stéphane Dion counted a mere 5%, nosing out US Republican candidate Senator John McCain who managed 3%.

Obama's popularity was across the board, 24% support from conservatives and 28% from liberals. The poll was conducted by asking 1,000 Canadians and 1,000 Americans.

On health care 45% Americans thought the Canadian system better while 42% indicated that the US system was adequate.

Politically Americans tend to be more conservative than Canadians. Canadians are 12% very liberal, 39% liberal, 3% very conservative and 38% conservative. Americans 7% are very liberal, 30% liberal, 10% very conservative, 47% conservative.
