At the NATO Nuclear Policy Symposium, held between October 13-14, in Tallinn, nuclear weapons and policy experts from Alliance member countries discussed topics concerning NATO’s deterrence posture.

According to Minister of Defence Hannes Hanso, who gave the opening speech at the symposium, NATO’s deterrence posture is comprised of a balance between conventional and nuclear capabilities.

“Nuclear weapons are the core component in the Alliance's deterrence posture, which together with the member countries’ conventional capabilities provide the appropriate balance,” said Minster of Defence Hanso.

According to the conference panelist Jüri Luik, the Director of the International Centre for Defence and Security, all Allies share the burden of nuclear deterrence.

“The Alliance’s deterrence posture must adapt to the changed security situation,” said Luik.
